Frane Franicevic takes First Place

in blistering Santa Rosa Bocce League Tourney.

After fighting for three rounds, Frane defeated
a relentless charge from Fritz Spotleson in the final game to win the first Singles Tournament in Santa Rosa Bocce League history. Ashi Olshan took the third place spot after a fierce challenge from Joan Evans.

Heat was definitely a factor as a few stars were born and a few upsets happened in the process. Joan prevailed against Crazy Eights teammate Joe McGovren in a game that went to the wire in Round Two. But, it was Joe's narrow defeat of Joan Talamentez by one point that narrowly kept her out of Round Two. "Most Improved Player" award had to go to Gerri Goin, who won her first round and then took eight points from eventual 2nd place winner Fritz in Round Two. It was enough to secure her a spot on the Allstars.

League founder, Robert Battaile observed new levels of competition and focus. "Several of these players had never played bocce until this year. Now, they are enjoying the exhilaration of an intense level of performance that was demonstrated here today in Santa Rosa at Juilliard Park." First Place received the trophy and $25, Second Place garnered a whopping $50 and Third Place took home $25. "We're entering the big-time prize money leagues now," said Battaile as he wrote the checks.

The top eight players and four alternates make up the Santa Rosa Allstars which plays in the Regional Exhibition Match on Nov. 7th at Juilliard Park, starting at 10:00 am. The Winning Team from the Fall League Playoffs of Oct 17th and teams from Sonoma, Benicia, Marin and St. Helena will likely be competing in the Exhibition Match.

Here are the top eight Allstars in order: Frane Franicevic (Suncé Winery), Fritz Spotleson (Balls of Fire), Ashi Olshan (Ballistics), Joan Evans (Crazy Eights), Gerri Goin (Lucky 13), Jim Wilder (High Rollers), Joe McGovren (Crazy Eights), James Boitano (Crazy Eights).

And, the four alternates: Joan Talamentez (Squadra Italiana Due), Corbin Goin (Suncé Winery), Barbara Spotleson (Balls of F ire) tied with Carole Stewart (Squadra Italiana Due). Alternates are likely to play as the Winning League Team's players would join their teammates for the Exhibition Match.

As you can see, the Tounrnament provides an excellent opportunity for players from different nights to interact and compete with one another. Local bocce legend and mentor to several league members, a dapper-looking Monty Montague and wife, Ruth dropped by for the first couple of rounds. Again, Juilliard Park providing a beautiful backdrop and the great sport of bocce providing an enriching experience for those who partake of its subtle charms. Thanks also to the Santa Rosa Recreation and Parks Department for their co-sponsorship of the Santa Rosa Bocce League's efforts.
